Friday: I Can Relate - Get Rid of It

Today's Reading:
Ephesians 4:26-32 (NIV)
26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Consider This:
  • In verse 27 Paul says not to give the devil a “foothold.” What is a “foothold”?
  • What role does “agreement” play in the devil’s ability to gain a “foothold” within us?
  • Describe the foothold that was achieved in Cain Gen 4:5-8 and Judas Mk 14:4-10.
  • What agreement did the devil create in each?
  • Did the devil try to create agreement with Jesus Lk 4:2-13?
  • How did Jesus respond?
  • How will you respond the next time you are angry?
Treasure Applications:
  • There are many people wrestling with anger.  How do we love them well?
  • Have you ever discovered joy coming out of a situation where you were angry?
  • How did that happen?

  • In what ways does anger hurt the person who is angry?
  • How is anger like an animal? Hint: what happens when we feed it?
  • When does anger grieve the Holy Spirit?
Treasure Applications:
  • How can you serve people who are struggling with anger?
  • If you have ever experienced healing from anger, how did your perspective about the situation change?

Today's Reading:
Ephesians 5:25-31 (NIV)
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
Consider This:
  • Why does the husband leave is father and mother?
  • What does it mean to “cleave?”
  • Where else is this talked about in the bible? (See Gen 2:24)
  • When it says, “for this reason” what reason is he referring to?
  • Does the woman “leave” her father and mother?
  • How is this dynamic of “leaving” important in the man’s ability to “sacrifice” himself?
  • How did Jesus demonstrate this dynamic of “leaving and cleaving?”
  • What implications does this have for your life?
Treasure Application:
  • Is it possible for a husband to love his wife and discover joy in the marriage even if things in the home aren’t always “happy”?
  • How does loving others within the body of Christ allow us to discover joy?

Consider This:
  • There is a purpose for the way a husband is to love his wife, it is found in verse 26-27. What is the purpose listed in these verses?
  • Why do most husbands love their wives?
  • What is the difference between the two?
  • How do these differences affect the way we love each other?
  • Is there anything you need to change as a result of this revelation?
Treasure Applications:
  • When a husband submits to Christ and serves his wife how might that open doors to experience healing for the husband?  And the wife?
  • Can you think of a time when people within the church served each other and experienced healing?

  • How would you summarize his thoughts?
  • What comparisons is he making?
  • What are the implications of these comparisons?
Treasure Applications:
  • The world tries to teach us many false beliefs about love and particularly marriage.  What are three false beliefs you once believed about love and/or marriage that you have found freedom from?
  • What are some effective ways that Christians can teach non-Christians about what true love and marriage are really about?

  • Have you observed this working well?
Treasure Application:
  • The husband is instructed to love his wife.  How do you think the husband should love God?
  • How do you feel knowing that even when you didn’t love god He loved you enough to invite you into relationship with Him and wanted you to be part of His family, the Church?
