Friday: Why should a Christian fear God?

12/4/2020

Today's Reading:
Matthew 10:26-31 (HCSB)
26 “Therefore, don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper, proclaim on the housetops. 28 Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent.  30 But even the hairs of your head have all been counted. 31 So don’t be afraid therefore; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Consider This:
  • Your life is full of situations that cause you to fear.  If you fear God, can that change how you view the day-to-day trials and have an effect on how you live in general?
Treasure Application:
  • How does God feel about everyone?
  • How does fearing God cause us to love others well?
  • Is it possible to discover joy while also fearing God?

Today's Reading:
Matthew 10:28-31 (HCSB)
28 Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent.  30 But even the hairs of your head have all been counted. 31 So don’t be afraid therefore; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Consider This:
  • Jesus makes a distinction between “killing the body” and “destroying both soul and body in Hell”.  What is the difference?
  • Do you think about Hell as much as you think about Heaven?
  • Should we fear God because there is a Hell?  Do you?
Treasure Application:
  • How should the reality of Hell motivate us to serve others?
  • How can the reality of Hell motivate us to experience healing?

Today's Reading:
Matthew 10:26 (HCSB)
26 “Therefore, don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known.
Consider This:
  • How does it make you feel when you read that nothing will remain covered and everything will be made known?
  • Is this future revelation a cause of relief or concern for you?
  • Is there anything in your life that is hidden?
  • Should you fear God because He knows all?
Treasure Application:
  • How does learning about this future revelation direct us to find freedom from sin in our lives?
  • If you shared your shortcomings with other believers, what impact would that have on helping you to find freedom from those things you are in bondage too?

Matthew 10:26-31 (HCSB)

Consider This:
  • What situations, people, or places are you afraid of in life?
  • Why are you afraid and is there really a reason to be afraid?
  • This scripture talks about fearing God.  Do you?
Treasure Application:
  • How does a healthy “fear of God” lead to loving God?
  • How types of invitations can be motivated by a fear of God?

Friday: How Do You Become Mature?

7/24/2020

Today's Reading:
James 1:2-8 (HCSB)
2 Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.6 But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 An indecisive man is unstable in all his ways.
Consider This:
  • You are most likely in a trial right now.  How will this scripture change how you react to it in your life?  Explain.
Treasure Application:
  • Connect the ideas of walking with people during difficult times in their life and loving others well.
  • Have you ever loved someone enough to stick with them through dark times and then found joy when they moved out of that season of life?
  • Do you think there is a relationship between how difficult something is and how much joy there is when it is dealt with?

Today's Reading:
James 1:6 (HCSB)
6 But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind.
Consider This:
  • We often struggle with asking while also having faith and that can be because we are asking for the wring things.  How do we ask for the right thing and then ask in faith?
  • Should our faith be based on God providing exactly what we asked for or just that God is going to provide what is best?
Treasure Application:
  • Have you ever considered prayer as an act of service?
  • Have you ever considered joining a prayer team so that you could serve others through prayer?
  • Do you put enough thought into identifying those times when God has allowed you to experience healing?
  • When people experience healing do, they typically give God glory and praise or do they just act like it would have happened anyway?

Today's Reading:
James 1:5 (HCSB)
5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.
Consider This:
  • Are you wise?
  • Is wise the same thing as smart?
  • You read books to become “smart”.  How do you become wise spiritually?
  • Are you willing to experience what is required to be wise and have understanding?
Treasure Application:
  • You probably ask your friends things all the time without much formality or thought.  Do you treat prayer the same way?
  • Do your prayers sound like a conversation between friends or something else?
  • Have you ever seen God at work in your life (or in the life of someone else) by providing wisdom that you can only attribute to Him?

Today's Reading:
James 1:2 (HCSB)
2 Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials,
Consider This:
  • What is this scripture asking us to do?
  • Can you be in the middle of a trial and have joy?
  • Can you think of a trial you have experienced and later found joy in that trial?
  • Do you have an example you can share?
Treasure Application:
  • What are some of the things we must learn to be able to be able to recognize joy during trials?
  • Do you think people that can be joyful in trials have found freedom from many of the common things that hold us in bondage?
  • How might selfishness and self-centeredness impact our ability to live in joy?

Treasure Application:
  • What is James inviting believers to do/embrace?
  • What are some of the ways this shows our love for God?
