Friday: How Does God Want Me to Love?

Today's Reading:
John 3:16 (HCSB)

“For God loved the world in this way:  He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

Colossians 1:21-22 (HCSB)
Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds because of your evil actions.  But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him

Luke 6:27-28 (HCSB)
“But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Consider this:
  • According to John 3:16, which people are excluded from God’s love?
  • Did you deserve to have Jesus love you enough to die for you on a cross?
  • Does the fact that God loved you even though you were alienated and hostile to Him say something about how amazing you are or how amazing He is?
Treasure Application:
  • How does God’s love for you set an example and empower you to LOVE OTHERS?
  • Do you have the right to wait to LOVE OTHERS until they have become easy to love or worthy of love?
  • When you LOVE OTHERS well, does that say something about you, about Jesus, or both?
  • How can loving those who are difficult to love help you to DISCOVER JOY?

Today's Reading:
Luke 10:25-37 (HCSB)

Just then an expert in the law stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“What is written in the law?” He asked him. “How do you read it?”
He answered:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.
“You’ve answered correctly,” He told him. “Do this and you will live.”
But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead.  A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side.  In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.  But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.  He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.  The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’
“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
“The one who showed mercy to him,” he said.
Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”
Consider this:
  • When you come across situations in your life and you can either get involved or “stay out of it”, how do you decide when to jump in?
  • Depending on the situation, do you jump in with both feet or wake a wait and see approach?
  • What factor cause you to react the way you do?
  • You may come across situations this week or in the coming weeks that you can either get involved in or “pass by”.  What will you do differently (maybe mentally) when you are confronted by these opportunities?
Treasure Application:
  • When you find yourself in a difficult situation, do you tend keep it all to yourself, INVITE God into the situation and keep it private, INVITE others into the situation and forget God, or INVITE God and others into your difficulty?
    • Do you wish you handled these situations differently?
    • How can you learn to do better at this?
  • Have you found challenges in your life make it easier or more difficult to LOVE GOD?
    • What are some ways that loving God and being loved by God make a difficult situation easer to face?

Today's Reading:
Luke 10-31-33 (HCSB)

A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side.  In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.  But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.
Consider this:
  • The Priest and the Levite passed by.  If you were the man on the side of the road how would you feel when you see them keep walking past you?
  • What would you have done if you saw the man?
  • Why do we want to pass by and not get involved?
  • Why do you think the Samaritan stopped and helped the man?
Treasure Application:
  • Have you ever heard anyone say “I will pray for you” in a way that felt like it was a nice sentiment, but you suspected they would likely never actually pray for that person?
    • What message did that actually communicate?
    • Have you ever been guilty of saying that yourself and failing to follow through?
  • How does our PRAYER on behalf of another person convey genuine compassion?
  • How does praying for someone allow you to better SEE GOD at work?

Today's Reading:
Luke 10:27-29 (HCSB)

He answered:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.
“You’ve answered correctly,” He told him. “Do this and you will live.”
But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Consider this:
  • Who do you think your neighbor is?
  • Who does God think your neighbor is?
  • Is there a significant difference between how you treat you family members and your “neighbors”?
  • What is the difference, and should there be one?
Treasure Application:
We live in the modern world where societies are polarized, racial tensions create conflict, and people are trying to be better than their neighbor.
  • Can we FIND FREEDOM from the lies, false ideas, and suspicions the world would have us believe about our neighbors?
  • How does LEARNING about our neighbors change our perspective of them?
