Today's Reading:
John 21:15-17
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”
He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
Consider This:
  • Why does Jesus ask Peter to help other people?
  • Doesn’t Peter need help?
  • How does helping others strengthen us?
  • Are there examples in the bible of People getter stronger by helping others?
    • (Example: Gideon, Sampson, Ester etc.)
  • Where can you help others?
Treasure Application:
  • Do you think that Peter was motivated to love others after this experience of being forgiven and loved by Jesus?
  • Describe the kind of joy you think Peter experience when serving others after this event.

49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
Consider This:
  • What is the “promise” that Jesus is talking about?
  • How does Jesus describe the “Promise?”
  • What does the word “power” mean in this verse?
  • How would you describe it?
  • Have you ever felt this power before?
  • Is it something you can see?
  • When do you experience this power?
  • How do you get the “Promise?”
  • Who is the Promise?
  • Do you have the promise? 
Treasure Application:
  • How did/does Jesus empower us to serve others, even beyond our own strength?
  • Why don’t we get the credit when others around us are experiencing healing?

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Consider This:
  • What mission does Jesus give to the disciples? (see Acts 1:8)
  • How does a mission bring you joy?
  • Have you ever had a mission before?
  • What was it and how did it make you feel?
  • Was your mission connected to your relationship to Christ? Explain.
  • Are you a witness for Christ? 
Treasure Application:
  • How does prayer help us to be more sensitive to the work of the Holy Spirit?
  • Have you ever been praying for someone and saw God working in their lives, even if they couldn’t recognize it?

Today's Reading:
Luke 24:46-53
46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Consider This:
  • Have you ever experienced joy in church or as a result of being in the presence of God?
    • What was it like?
  • Have you ever had news that made you incredibly happy to tell people? (An example might be “having a baby.”)
  • Have you ever felt that way about the news you have about Jesus?  
Treasure Application:
  • At this point the disciple’s lives they had received many initiations from Jesus.  Do you think they had any understanding of what those invitations were or the impact they would have?
  • Is there an invitation Jesus has extended to you that you need to accept in order to love God more fully?

  • What gave the disciples “great joy?”
  • What has changed?
  • Why did they stay in the temple continually?
  • What were they expecting to happen?
  • Do you think they knew what would happen?
  • Using your imagination describe what happens in verse 51?
  • Where is the Kingdom of Heaven?
  • Have you discovered Joy?
Treasure Application:
  • Do you think the disciples were happy that Jesus had left them?
  • What as the difference between happiness and joy?
  • Identify one way you will go above and beyond this week to love someone?

  • Jesus served Peter by helping him understand he was forgiven and loved.  How did this enable Peter to experience healing?
  • How do you think this experience impacted Peter’s desire and ability to serve others for Jesus?

  • Are there any areas in your life where you have failed and are struggling like Peter?
  • Are you lifting that situation up to Jesus in prayer?
  • Have you seen God moving in that area of your life?
  • Are you willing to accept His love and forgiveness?

  • From the moment of his denials of Christ until this conversation, do you think Peter was in bondage to false ideas about himself?
  • What mental prisons might Peter have started building?
  • What did Peter learn that allowed him to find freedom?

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
Consider This:
  • What cause their eyes to be opened?
  • Why do you think this happened with the breaking of the bread?
  • Where have you recognized Jesus before?
  • If you go back there do you have a Spiritual experience of any kind?
  • What difference does it make to see God in our lives? 
Treasure Application:
  • Do you think this experience provided a drive in these men to love others well?
  • Would you consider this an example of discovering joy?
