Today's Reading:
Exodus 14:22
22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.
Consider This:
  • Do you think the Israelites were still afraid as they walked through the sea?
  • What implications does that have for you?
  • Is God’s deliverance free from all fear?
  • Would we like for it to be?
  • What difference does God’s presence make when we walk through the fear?
  • Can you walk in God’s presence as you walk through your hardship?
  • Did Jesus model this?
Treasure Application:
  • The Israelites shared this experience as a people.  How do you think this event allowed them to love each other better?
  • Once they were on the other side and had watched their captors destroyed.  How do you think they felt when they looked at each other?
  • What are some ways they probably discovered joy that day?

Today's Reading:
Exodus 14:21
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided,
Consider This:
  • How does God “drive back” the sea?
  • Has God ever used the wind before to accomplish His will? (Genesis 8:1, Ezekiel 37:9, Acts 2:2)
  • What/Who is this wind?
  • What has been your experience with the Holy Spirit?
Treasure Application:
  • Moses was serving God.  How do you think this experience promoted healing in his relationship with God?
  • Moses was also serving the Israelites.  How do you think this experience promoted healing in his relationship with them?

Today's Reading:
Exodus 14:19-20
19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.
Consider This:
  • How does God present Himself in these verses?
  • What function does He provide?
  • How do you understand the terms “light” and “darkness?”
  • How does God use light and darkness to deliver Israel?
  • Did Jesus ever use these terms? (Matthew 4:16, Matthew 6:23, John 1:5, John 3:19)
  • Are you in the light or darkness?
Treasure Application:
  • Are you more likely to pray when you are in the light or in the darkness?
  • Do you think that there should be a difference?
  • Have you ever seen God at work in your life so plainly that He may as well have been a physical pillar of cloud?

Exodus 14:19-22
19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.
Consider This:
  • What is happening in these verses?
  • What is God doing?
  • How is God moving?
  • What does God want the Israelites to do?
  • Do you think God has had this ending in mind all along?
  • Do you think that God has an ending prepared for your struggle?
Treasure Application:
  • What are some things the Israelites were learning as they lived through the events of this passage?
  • Given what they learned, what false ideas to you think they started to find freedom from?

Consider This:
  • What expectations do you have about hardships in life?
  • Do you expect to have hardships?
  • What do you expect God to do about your hardships?
Treasure Application:
  • Have you invited God into your hardships?
  • How could intentionally inviting God to be present with you during your hardships show your love for Him?

Today's Reading:
Exodus 14:15-16
15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.
Consider This:
  • How does God respond to Moses?
  • What are the implications of this response?
  • Does Moses already have what he needs?
  • Has God already answered his prayer?
  • What does this lesson mean for you?
Treasure Application:
  • Do you think loving the Israelites brought God joy as he watched them grow from slaves to an independent people?
  • Do you think God finds joy as He loves you through your process of growing and drawing closer to Him?

Today's Reading:
Exodus 14:13
13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.

James 5:8
8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

2 Thessalonians 2:15
15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

Colossians 4:12
12 Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.

Philippians 4:1
1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!

Ephesians 6:14
14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
Consider This:
  • Read Exodus 14:13, does Moses remind you of Jesus in this verse?
  • In what way?
  • What is the command most often given by Jesus?
  • What does it mean to “stand firm?” (see James 5:8, 2 Thessalonians 2:15, Colossians 4:12, Philippians 4:1, Ephesians 6:14) Is “standing firm” important to Jesus?
  • Are you standing firm?
Treasure Application:
  • Moses served his people as their leader.  Do you think this service allowed him to experience healing from the hurts and lack of confidence he suffered before God called him?
  • Do you think the Israelites experienced healing because of the way Moses served them and God?

Today's Reading:
Exodus 14:10-12
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord.  11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?  12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”
Consider This:
  • Who are the Israelites following?
  • How would they benefit from recognizing that they are following God and not Moses?
  • Who are you following?
  • How does it affect the way you engage the trials in your life?
Treasure Applications:
  • Why do you think the Israelites talked to Moses instead of talking to God?
  • The Israelites saw God because they followed Moses and he was following God.  Do you think that made it easier or harder for the individual Israelite to see what God was doing in their people?

  • Should they feel this way?
  • Have they forgotten the lessons of the plagues?
  • Do you forget the lessons that God has taught you in the past when you become afraid?
Treasure Application:
  • The Israelites have been given physical freedom, but they are ready to return to slavery.  What are they still in bondage too?
  • What do they have to learn in order to live as free people?
  • Who is going to teach them how-to find freedom?

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.
Consider This:
  • Name a person you have followed that strengthened your confidence?
  • Have you ever followed someone who strengthened your fear?
  • Based on Exodus 14:10-16 how do you picture this scene?
  • Does anything about it surprise you?
  • Why are the participants acting the way they are acting?
  • What are the emotional states of the different groups?
  • Who do you relate to the most?
Treasure Application:
  • How might the Israelite’s situation have worked out differently if they invited God into their situation instead of complaining to Moses about their situation?
  • Can you see how God is inviting His people to love Him?
