The First Reading (OT):
Song of Solomon 3:1-11 (NIV)
1 All night long on my bed
    I looked for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
2 I will get up now and go about the city,
    through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
3 The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.
“Have you seen the one my heart loves?”
4 Scarcely had I passed them
when I found the one my heart loves.
I held him and would not let him go
till I had brought him to my mother’s house,
to the room of the one who conceived me.
5 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and by the does of the field:
Do not arouse or awaken love
    until it so desires.

6 Who is this coming up from the wilderness
    like a column of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh and incense
made from all the spices of the merchant?
7 Look! It is Solomon’s carriage,
    escorted by sixty warriors,
    the noblest of Israel,
8 all of them wearing the sword,
    all experienced in battle,
each with his sword at his side,
prepared for the terrors of the night.
9 King Solomon made for himself the carriage;
he made it of wood from Lebanon.
10 Its posts he made of silver,
    its base of gold.
Its seat was upholstered with purple,
    its interior inlaid with love.
Daughters of Jerusalem, 11 come out,
and look, you daughters of Zion.
Look on King Solomon wearing a crown,
the crown with which his mother crowned him
on the day of his wedding,
    the day his heart rejoiced.

Consider This:
  • We often forget there is romance/love poetry in the Bible, but this area of our life is important to God.  Do you connect with this passage or does it seem far away for you right now?
  • How can you tell if this area of your life is in alignment with God's will?
  • How can you help others to defy our culture and keep love within the boundaries that God has established for our benefit?
  • What impact has separation had on the lover and the beloved?
  • Is it possible that our modern day technologies have allowed us to have shallow connectedness that sometimes robs us of the intimacy and expectation that comes from being apart?

 The Second Reading (NT):
Mark 16:1-8 (NIV)

1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
Consider This:
  • What is the most amazing experience you have ever had?
  • The women in this passage were also present at the crucifixion.  How would you describe the faith of these women?
  • Do you think that Jesus viewed the role and impact of women the same way His contemporary patriarchal society viewed them?
  • Why do you think Peter was specifically mentioned?
